Brilliant. That’s the word that summarizes this series as a whole. One giant novel played out on the small screen. Still, last night’s finale has a lot of fans perturbed. Big time *SPOILERS* ahead. Questions that will go unanswered, forever:
1. What is the island? Is it sentient? How does it affect life off-island as seen in season 4?
2. Who were the egyptians that inhabited the island, built the statue, wrote the hieroglyphics, and worshiped the Smoke Monster?
3. if the light turned MiB (who still doesn’t and never will have a name) into a monster, why not Desmond, or Jack? Clearly they didn’t suffer a fate worse than death (like crazy mama said would happen).
4. How did Hurley run the island? How did he die?
5. If this limbo was the place where dead Oceanic island survivors go, how did they make appearances off-island (Ana-Lucia, Charlie)?
6. How did crazy island mom get her philosophies?
7. what happened to Christian’s body?
8. Why do pregnant women die?
9. Who was the skeleton near the Light?
And more. These are driving fans nuts and while some say the writers copped-out (and they did), don’t let it take away from the experience as a whole. The answers don’t matter, everyone dies. Everything ends. The whole thing reminds me of something Aslan said in the Horse and his boy. The egyptians had their story, hurley and ben had their island stories. Those are different novels, not told here.
In the end, the show was like the Wizard of Oz. During the first two seasons, we heard of Oz and his power. In the 3rd we had glimpses of his people and their wondrous city. The 4th, we were in the city and the hype was building. The 5th, we saw the great and powerful Oz. The 6th, he turned out to be just a normal man, as confused and powerless as those seeking his guidance. For some, that’s disappointing. For me, that’s good writing.
The show’s finale did all one can expect from a finale; it brought closure to the main plot and characters. Like it or not, the writers had a limited number of episodes and some answers probably didn’t fit that budget. Personally, I found all of the scenes to be exciting and touching. My brother, who wasn’t a fan of the show until this season, said it was amazing. You want answers? Write some good fan fiction. Good writing. I’ll be happy to read it. It may not be LOST canon, but so what. If the characters in the show can dream, so can we.
